Participatory Performance exploring the history of colonisation, attitudes toward, and experiences of racism in The Netherlands. This project involved the creation of an olfactory ‘giftbox’, where each product within the box was tied to an auditory story that delved into the colonial history of the country and lived experiences of racism. The smells in the giftbox acted as a sensory gateway, telling a story in parallel with the auditory narrative, creating an immersive and layered experience for participants.
During the performance, participants were invited to engage with the olfactory products while listening to the soundtrack, which guided them through the complex histories and experiences being explored. By weaving together smell and sound, this project aimed to deepen the emotional and intellectual engagement with the histories of colonialism and racism in the Netherlands.
This work was created in collaboration with Kiara Ama Jade, bringing together an innovative use of the senses to address pressing social and historical issues.
